Trapping Advice Empty making lures

Post  southernlures Fri Jan 14, 2011 11:25 pm

first off i will be glad to help any of you get started on making lures for your trap lines.there is no greater feeling than catching a animal or breaking a personal record from a lure you have made your self.

i have some basic lure formulas to get you started along the way.

here is the first things to do

pick the animal
pick the base
pick the ingredents

from there we will learn how to mix it all up

if you have any questions just pm me and we will work on your lures and baits

im a coon trapper most of the time.
use stakes as much as you can, add swivels, and keep your pan tension set right!

staking is better for many reasons, ask some big trappers they will tell you staking is better then tying off to a tree or something.
grant it stakes cant be used every were i use drowning set ups in water sets. every were else i started using stakes so the animal cant twist off as easy, and cant pull out easy, and it saves the fur.
there are lots of different staking systems, pogo, earth anchors and rebar, etc. i use rebar cause its cheap...and um its not to heavy Smile unless your 85 pounds carring 24 stakes at 1 time might get a little heavy Smile but you dont have to set 100 traps in 1 spot just carry how many you need for 1 spot then go back to the truck/4wheeler or what ever.
staking is better then tying off to trees...i learn that on Tman. and i thank them guys for telling me that! it did help out allot, oh and try not to set were the animal can use a tree to pull out.

When you miss or lose a animal at a set do not tally that as a total loss.. This is a great time to really investigate and look at the details of what happened so you can change things in the future and prevent it from occurring again. Doing this can and will make you a better trapper.. Live and learn....
